Breaking News :Herdsmen’ kill man, pregnant wife in Benue

Fulani herdsmen have again attacked Guma Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, killing a pregnant woman and her husband in the process.

Guma is one of the LGAs in the state that has been most hard hit by herdsmen attacks since 2010.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benue State Command, Sewuese Anene, said the police had got wind of the attack.

She explained that even though the police had received reports that two persons lost their lives in the attacks, the police had dispatched a team of detectives to the area to confirm the true situation of things.

Anene said until that was done, the police could not confirm the actual situation at the scene of the incident.

Residents of nearby villages said they heard sporadic gunshots in the early hours of Wednesday night around Tarkende.

The herdsmen who attacked Tarkende village, Mbadwem Council Ward of Guma LGA, also abducted another woman who later escaped from her captors and ran for about 30kms before finally getting to safety.

Chairman of the LGA, Anthony Shawon, who confirmed the incident to newsmen in Makurdi on Wednesday, said the herders carried out the attack on the village about 2am on Wednesday.

He explained that the herders had encamped all around the village, grazing their cattle and killing people in the surrounding villages.

Shawon explained that the villagers had appealed to him to prevail on the army to send its troops to the area to enable them engage in their farming activities, which they had not fully engaged in since the advent of the rains due to herdsmen attacks.

“Sadly, this is the situation in all parts of Guma LGA of the state,” he said.”
